Worm Medications...

SECARE does not claim to have any veterinary training, and any information and/or advice should be discussed with your vet.

Dogs being what they are, get into things we'd rather they didn't touch, but they do and sometimes we have to deal with the after effects.  One of those effects is worms.  It's a normal and even common part of every dog's life.  Some of the dogs that come into SECARE need help right away in combating a worm infestation and we have a few different medications to help treat those situations.  All dogs receive worm medication up on arrival at SECARE and any follow-up treatment during their stay.

Here is a list of the most common medications the shelter will use for any animal while they are with us.

Strongid is Pyrantel Pamoate.  A yucky yellow substance that is guaranteed to cause your dog to make a face.  But it is one of the most common medications used in treating some of the more common infestations.  This is most effective against roundworms, hookworms, and some stomach worms.  This is given every two weeks when a dog has a significant problem.  It's also given to puppies to help them while they wait for their own immune system to mature to the point that they can help control these parasites themselves.

Panacur (Safeguard) is fenbendazole.  It is chalk colored and will also cause a grimace when your dog has to take it.  It is helpful with roundworms, hookworms, whipworms and some species of tapeworm.  This is usually given over the course of three days although it can be given for a slightly longer time in tougher cases.

Ivermectin (Ivomec) is another wormer we commonly use for intestinal parasites, but is also helpful in treating mange, lice, mites and is one of the active ingredients for heartworm medication.  Ivermectin cannot be used on some breeds of dog and so you much check with a vet before using this.
