Vaccinations... SECARE does not claim to have any veterinary training, and any information and/or advice should be discussed with your vet. Vaccinations are an important part of your dog's life. Just like with people, it provides immunization against many serious and even deadly diseases. At SECARE, we use a 5 vaccine in the effort to protect against Parvovirus, Hepatitis, Adenovirus Type 2, Distemper and Parainfluenza. It's important that you understand that these vaccines help protect against these diseases, but they are not a 100% guarantee of immunity. Just as in the flu shot, the parvo vaccine will work against certain more common strains, but not against every strain. However, keeping your animal current on vaccines will go a long way in helping your pet survive if they should contract something like Parvo. Generally speaking, puppies will receive a series of three (3) doses of the 5-way vaccine at early puppyhood, plus a rabies vaccine at around 4-6 months of age. Talk to your vet about booster shots, but those will probably also occur every year with the exception of the rabies vaccine which is available in a three year dose. We give the three year dose for any dogs old enough to receive the rabies vaccine while at the shelter. Talk to your vet about any additional vaccinations your pet may need. Depending on your location and lifestyle, your dog may also need bordetella (kennel cough) it if it going to spend time in boarding or day care. |
